Adriana Calcanhotto is a contemporary Elis Regina, a singer who honours samba and boss nova and simultaneously flirts with new genres and currents in popular music. She broke through in 1990, when Brazilian music was mainly aimed at outside influences, and scored hits with hip versions of old songs by Caetano Veloso and Lilian & Renato. Calcanhotto dares to record frivolous kitsch alongside jazzy songs, electronic grooves and Portuguese raps. ‘One of the great voices of Brazil’ (JungleDrums Online).
