CALEFAX & ERIC VLOEIMANS
On the spot
Olivier Boekhoorn hobo, Ivar Berix klarinet, Raaf Hekkema saxofoon, Jelte Althuis basklarinet, Alban Wesly fagot, Eric Vloeimans trompet
The Calefax Reed Quintet challenges master trumpeter Eric Vloeimans to explore music from the 17th century early baroque. Furthermore the ensemble plays new compositions by Vloeimans and three other musicians from jazz and improvised music. The similarity between jazz and early baroque is improvisation, a custom that has slowly disappeared from classical music performance. Calefax and Vloeimans restore this tradition with an exciting concert that bridges composition and spontaneous invention. ‘Calefax – five extremely gifted Dutch gents who almost made the reed quintet seem the best musical format on the planet’ (The Times).
