Pianiste/componiste Carla Bley hoort tot de belangrijkste componisten/arrangeurs en bandleiders van de na-oorlogse jazz. Midden jaren zestig kreeg zij bekendheid als componiste voor toenmalig echtgenoot Paul Bley en schreef vervolgens jazzgeschiedenis met haar eclectische jazzopera's 'Escalator over the Hill', 'Tropic Appetites' en 'A Genuine Tong Funeral'. Bley streeft naar de volmaakte synthese tussen jazz, volksmuziek en hedendaagse gecomponeerde muziek. Ook in kleine bezetting gaat dit haar heel goed af, zoals in trio met basgenie (en partner) Steve Swallow en de Britse saxofonist Andy Sheppard.
