Drummer Ches Smith has a fondness for musical eccentrics. Prior to his percussion studies at the prestigious Mills College he improvised with punks and metalheads in his native California. He developed his sonically exuberant style in the bands of New Yorkers Marc Ribot and Tim Berne . In These Arches he plays with saxophonists Tony Malaby and Tim Berne, Andrea Parkins and guitarist Mary Halvorson, whose previous performances at the Bimhuis were critically acclaimed. ‘Proportionate doses of knockabout groove, scratchy free improvisation and chamber-esque restraint’ (New York Times).
