ATLAS FESTIVAL
HIJAZ
Moufadhel Adhoum ud, Niko Deman piano, Chryster Aerts drums, Rui Salgado bas, Vardan Hovanissian duduk
The name Hijaz refers to the typically Arabian scale, as well as to the word jazz, which is no coincidence. The band sprung from the meeting between pianist Niko Deman and Moufadhel Adhou, master of the ud, the Arabian lute. They unite Greek rembetika and Arabian music, supported by the solid jazz grooves of double bassist Rui Salgado and drummer Chryster Aerts. On top of that Vardan Hovanissian shines on duduk, the Armenian reed instrument. The result is music with ‘backbone, humor and fantasy’ (Parool).
