An evening with highly regarded artists from both the American and the European improvised music scenes. Cherry Duyns’ recent documentary about Misha Mengelberg is followed by the legendary ICP Orchestra. Finally, Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus) will join forces with ICP drummer Han Bennink and New York’s best kept secret, sax player Bill McHenry.

The documentary Misha Enzovoort by Cherry Duyns is a confrontational portrait of the ICP Orchestra. Founder and pianist Misha Mengelberg suffers from dementia and the band members explain the impact his changing condition has on them. Interviews are alternated with live performances recorded during ICP’s British tour in 2013.

The Amsterdam-based ICP Orchestra is an example for improvising musicians all over the world. Instant Composers Pool, which was founded in 1967 by Mengelberg and Han Bennink, has developed into a unique combination of big band and string orchestra. ICP couples swing and avant-garde, with a healthy dose of absurdism.

The piano trio is hip, in part thanks to The Bad Plus. The pianist of the American trio, Ethan Iverson, has received carte blanche at the Bimhuis. For this concert he’ll invite ICP’s drummer Han Bennink and sax player Bill McHenry. This rare tenor talent from New York, who recorded his debut album with Paul Motian, deserves wider recognition in Europe. ‘There are tons of young jazz saxophonists out there pursuing ideas of harmony and structure and rhythm, but he has something rare going for him. He has a sound’ (New York Times).

Afterwards at the café: DJ Morsanek

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
