20:30   € 18 / € 15 (CJP, student card, stadspas) I.s.m. Jazzism, Live stream Bimhuis Radio

James Brandon Lewis tenorsax, Luke Stewart bas, Warren 'Trae' Crudup drums

Promising New York tenor sax player with an adventurous flow. ‘A style that traverses everything and creates a lasting impression’ (JazzNu). Surprise hit at North Sea Jazz.

James Brandon Lewis has held the attention of jazz critics for several years already. His powerful, fluent style has been compared to the flow of a rapper. Another source of inspiration, alongside hip-hop, dub and gospel, is the raw jazz funk of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time. On his most recent album No Filter he sounds ‘more fiery and fierce than ever’, according to de Volkskrant. His performance at North Sea Jazz 2016 was regarded as one of the highlights of the festival.

‘Tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, who originated from Buffalo, New York, comes to the fore with a daring set of sharp jazz, powered by a two-piece rhythm section. His playing is permeated with Ornette Coleman and James Blood Ulmer: a similar drive and vicious improvisational style. A man to watch’ (Jazzism).

‘Street-smart, rooted firmly in hip-hop ancestry yet crafted to honor the tenets of inspired jazz improvisation’ (Jazz Times).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
