CULTURE RESOURCE (AL MAWRED AL THAQAFY, CAIRO) & EUROPEAN CULTURAL FOUNDATION (ECF) PRESENT:

HEWAR & FRIENDS

PLUS: BOOK PRESENTATION & INTERVIEW WITH THE MUSICIANS

HOSTED BY ABDELKADER BENALI

Hewar are: Kinan Azmeh clarinet, Issam Rafie oud, Jasser Haj Youssef violin, Kinan Abou Afach cello, Mohamed Seif Elyazal bass, Omar Musfi percussion

The name of this ensemble says it all: Hewar, Dialogue in Arabic. Hewar brings together an amazingly fresh and diverse musical pallet and influences - namely Arabic, jazz, scat, opera and classical music which makes it a truly unique venture. The band, building on the acclaimed individual talents of each of its members, juxtaposes and meshes these musical styles to create a truly one-of-a-kind genre-breaking music.

Hewar attempts to transcend the barriers of cultural disparities and misconceptions. The unique musical exchange between different musical personalities establishes an open communication, building on what brings humans closer together rather than separates them. This reflects an approach that is as musically-based as much as it has social and political references and subtexts.

European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and Culture Resource, in collaboration with Stichting DOEN and Boekmanstichting are happy to invite you for the extended evening programme, hosted by Abdelkader Benali. Before the concert we organise a short inspiring book launch of our publication Cultural Policies in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. The book gives a full picture of policies in transition, helping culture to develop in local as well as transnational territories. The book can also be purchased at a special reduced rate during the evening.

In the break we invite you to get to know the musicians and their fascinating perception of the role of music better during an interview led by Abdelkader Benali and Basma el Husseiny (Culture Resource).
