Two of Europe’s most prominent pianists will meet on the Bimhuis stage for this unique double feature. Misha Mengelberg, éminence grise of Dutch improvisation music, meets Fay Victor. The New York vocalist ‘actually stretches the definition of jazz vocals with Betty Carter, Hendrix and Sun Ra’s song-based cosmic poetry all in the mix’ (Jazzwise).Victor and Mengelberg have played together before in the group FreeSong Suite and with the legendary ICP Orchestra. Their debut as a duo features free-spirited interpretations of pieces by Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols and more.
After the break a solo set by Roscoe Mitchell, leader in the field of avant-garde jazz and contemporary music, and founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago.
In the third set German-Russian master pianist Simon Nabatov will play as a guest of Longrun Development of the Universe. This trio led by tuba player/composer Karl Ludwig Hübsch blends contemporary music, jazz and improvisation in high-speed, expressive ensemble playing. ‘Outstanding and unusual, a serious listening pleasure...’ (Cadence Magazine)
