Cello player Matthew Barley is always on the look-out for extreme playing styles and techniques but also venues in which to play them,He performs at the Royal Albert Hall as well as in schools and prisons. Aside from concerts by classical and contemporary composers he plays improvised music and works with traditional Indian and African musicians, as well as London grime-DJs. He is a specialist in combining cello with electronics and is comfortable playing preludes by Bach alongside improvisations on electric cello. Collaboration is essential for Barley; on June 11th he will play at the Bimhuis with his life partner, the Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova, and tonight with the string section of the Metropole Orchestra. This programme includes improvisations and arrangements. ‘Barley’s execution and quality of invention are exceptional’ (Jazzwise).
