Rightfully so, Downbeat crowned the new album by double bassist/composer Michael Formanek with five stars. The Rub and Spare Change sounds contemporary, breathes a calm atmosphere and gives room to the most imaginative soloists from the New York scene. The melodic interchange between Formanek and saxophonist Tim Berne holds centre stage. Pianist Craig Taborn and drummer Gerald Cleaver add scenic touches. ‘Music jumping in and out of boxes, swinging, tonal and atonal, with loads of sonic textures’ (Downbeat).
