Unique concert featuring Japanese improvising musicians, including koto player Michiyo Yagi, who has collaborated with John Zorn and many others. ‘Michiyo Yagi is a national treasure’ (Japan Times). Support act by vocalist Koichi Makigami.
Michiyo Yagi is known for her visionary improvisations on koto, the Japanese transverse harp, especially after the release of her debut album Shizuku (1999) on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Aside from traditional koto playing se continuously looks for collaboration with musician from other fields, including, jazz, rock, classical and free improv. She has recorded albums with, among others, Peter Brötzmann, Elliott Sharp and Paal Nilssen-Love. In her trio she performs with Norwegian double bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten en de Japanse drummer Tamaya Honda.
Prior to the Michiyo Yagi Trio: a solo performance by vocalist and theremin player Koichi Makigami, who mixes vocal techniques such as throat singing, human beatboxing and kabuki-inspired singing. He previously collaborated with, among others, Ikue Mori, Jim O’Rourke and Mike Patton.
As part of the project Far Out East! in collaboration with Polish festival Jazztopad and Japan Foundation.
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
