Louis Hayes celebrates his dazzling career as a drummer with, among others, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. ‘Everything this ageless talent touches seems to swing and glide’ (Downbeat).
Swing and bop remain fresh and innovative in the hands of drummer
Louis Hayes, who celebrates his 80th birthday at the Bimhuis with a
wonderful band starring trumpeter Jeremy Pelt.
At 18, Louis Hayes made his debut in New York in the Horace Silver Quintet and at 21 he played on John Coltrane’s album Lush Life. These were decisive moments in a career full of highlights, as the main drummer with Cannonball Adderley and Oscar Peterson, and in collaboration with celebrities such as Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and Wes Montgomery. Louis Hayes has hundreds of albums to his credit, and to this day he leads several bands including The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band.
