this double concert demonstrates how wide the spectrum of improvised music can be. opener is the new ensemble around guzheng virtuoso wu fei, known for her collaborations with john zorn and fred frith. the following duo musho features sofia jernberg and alexander hawkins, who draw from their experiences of playing with some of the greats of ethiopian music. house of wu fei: tides and time the everlasting cycle of ebb and flood, shaping coastal regions across the globe, is a source of inspiration for wu fei. ancient chinese poetry and the waves and tides are guidelines for her new ensemble house of wu fei, that originated in the city of ghent. wu fei can elicit unprecedented tones and timbres from the guzheng, the chinese zither, in combination with her voice. het solo album yuan appeared on john zorn’s label tzadik. on her unusual musical trajectory she met many other musical freethinkers including fred frith, gyan riley and abigail washburn. house of wu fei features dutch double bassist louise van den heuvel, and two flemish players: dijf sanders on electronica and simon segers (de beren gieren, black flower) on drums. musho (sofia jernberg & alexander hawkins) musho moves seamlessly between abstract exploration and the immediacy of song, with the visceral effect of sinking into a tender and powerful embrace. adopting the name musho—an amharic word meaning ‘sad song’—both members draw on their shared affinity for the music of ethiopia, having honed their languages in the company of musical elder statesmen from that country: sofia jernberg with hailu mergia, and alexander hawkins with mulatu astatke. swedish vocalist sofia jernberg and british pianist alexander hawkins have a special relationship with our stage, where they first performed together at october meeting 2016. jernberg has explored the outer edges of her voice in performances ranging from the opera pierrot lunaire by schoenberg to improv supergroup the end led by mats gustafsson. hawkins is internationally recognized as a musical innovator, having collaborated with legends such as anthony braxton and marshall allen, as well as peers such as tomeka reid and shabaka hutchings. musho by alexander hawkins - sofia jernberg ejn green pilot tour house of wu fei and musho take part in the green pilot tour, a project of europe jazz network (ejn) in collaboration with the european union under the creative europe program 2022-2024. the goal of the green pilot tour is sustainability, fair compensation, inclusiveness and gender balance in concert tours.

with his latest formation 3gen3 (‘three generations trio’) drum legend pierre courbois sheds new light on his impressive career. highlights from his oeuvre are being re-invented, whereas new pieces are added to their repertoire as well. he stretches the boundaries of improvisation with this trio that encompasses three generations and feautures the experienced bassist wiro mahieu alongside young saxophone talent jesse schilderink. internationally renowned dutch drummer pierre courbois has always been at the forefront of new developments in jazz. he took lessons with kenny clarke in paris, he stood at the foundation of free jazz and fusion in europe, and his drum breaks on vinyl are still being used regularly by djs. he has collaborated with numerous legends, including eric dolphy, ben webster and willem breuker. beforehand, there will be a screening of the documentary the pioneer, a film by els dinnissen. the pioneer offers a bird's eye view of pierre courbois' musical career. all kinds of people from the jazz world - jasper van het hof, jesse schilderink, hans dulfer, wiro mahieu and loek dikker, among others, collaborated on the documentary - contribute to a colourful portrait of the versatile courbois. timetable: 8:00 pm the pioneer 9:20 pm pierre courbois 3gen3

the annual festival red light jazz presents two promising bands who have strong ties with amsterdam. barencia is led by pianist xavi torres, known for fusing flamenco and jazz. beiggja is the new group with which saxophonist kika sprangers expands her horizon towards scandinavia. barencia named after an imaginary city, a point halfway between barcelona and florence. it is a unique fusion of different traditions, a magical alchemy that creates a spectacle of encounters between music and dance, between flamenco and jazz. the group was founded by xavi torres, a major talent of catalan jazz. a special role is reserved for mexican dancer karen lugo, who draws from flamenco and modern dance. double bassist michelangelo scandroglio is an emerging talent on the italian scene, and florentine drummer bernardo guerra is known for his ongoing collaborations with stefano bollani. in the heart of winter, just outside oslo, they gathered in a house nestled in a snowy forest. the house belonged to drummer per oddvar johansen, known for his recordings in the renowned label ecm recordings. the other players were saxophonist kika sprangers, pianist kjetil mulelid and bassist mats eilertsen, who’s also an ecm recording artist. surrounded by the bright, quiet stillness of the landscape, they set up to play music. what began as a spontaneous meeting blossomed into the debut album morning, to be released this summer. now they will continue the story on stage. ejn green pilot tour barencia takes part in the green pilot tour, a project of europe jazz network (ejn) co-financed by the european union under the creative europe program. the goal of the green pilot tour is sustainability, fair compensation, inclusiveness and gender balance in concert tours.

salseros and salseras, pay attention: we will bring sensation this summer at the tenth edition of salsa panorama, with no other than alain pérez and his orchestra. this band leader and singer was born in manaca iznaga, cuba, and started performing at the age of eight. he became a conductor, arranger, producer and composer in various genres, from salsa to flamenco and jazz. he has worked with a huge variety of artists including stars such as paco de lucía, estrella morente, celia cruz, chucho valdés, issac delgado and miguel poveda. for this edition, alain pérez will perform with the twelve members of his orchestra. after the concert the music will continue with a cuban salsa party at our café with an incredible view, where everybody is invited to dance. with or without experience, everybody is welcome. salsa panorama, organized by salsa district, has become a tradition at the bimhuis: this is the ninth edition already.
