Greek soprano Savina Yannatou and her band Primavera En Salonico (ECM Records) find a balance between traditional Mediterranean music and avant-garde. ‘Hauntingly beautiful’ (de Volkskrant).
Greek singer Savina Yannatou has mastered vocal techniques from all over the globe. Aside from traditional Mediterranean and Middle Eastern singing she experiments with throat singing and dissonance. With her band Primevara En Salonico she gives a unique interpretation of traditional music, from Greek celebration songs to Slavic singing and Sephardic-Jewish songs. Their most recent album Songs of Thessaloniki (ECM Records) evokes the rich, complex history of their hometown.
‘Hauntingly beautiful... Remarkable and wonderful how song cultures from the Balkan to the Middle East and even Ireland flow together organically into this universal, deeply meditative music’ (de Volkskrant).
‘She’s a phenomenon, averse to hypes... She joins pure tradition and modern freedom in songs that cross folk, religious repertory from the Renaissance and contemporary improvised music’ (Trouw).
