L’OEIL DE L’ELÉPHANT
Louis Sclavis (bass)clarinet/soprano sax, Michel Portal clarinet/bass clarinet/saxophone, Jean Pierre Drouet percussion, Henri Texier bass, Guy Le Querrec photography
For decades both jazz and Africa have been prominent themes in the work of Guy Le Querrec, photographer for the prestigious agency Magnum. The elephant’s eye, as photographed by Le Querrec, is the point of departure for this audiovisual concert. Projections of photographs serve as scores for an ensemble of French jazz veterans. The rhythm section of Henri Texier and Pierre Drouet is its propulsive engine and the wind section of Louis Sclavis and Michel Portal provides surprise, with virtuosic variations in tempo. ‘Sclavis creates an ‘imaginary folklore’ from American, Breton and North-African elements... brilliant playing on soprano saxophone and clarinets... Henri Texier is a magnificent bass player as well as a composer that dashes off the most graceful melodies’ (de Volkskrant).
