Calling a formation an all-star-band that included Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Stefon Harris, Miguel Zenon, Robin Eubanks, Renee Rosnes, Matt Penman and Eric Harland would be an understatement. SFJAZZ Collective was formed in 2004 by members who included Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton and Bobby Hutcherson and in 2006 was voted 'Rising Star Jazz Band of the Year' (DownBeat Critics Poll). Each year the band puts together a programme that features a single composer. In chronological order previous years have featured Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk. This year Wayne Shorter's compositions are featured along with original pieces by the band members themselves.
