her passion for drums led her along many steep paths and winding roads, but in the end korean drummer sun-mi hong established herself in amsterdam. here she developed herself as one of the most inventive drummers and composers of her generation. now she will perform music from her new album on edition records, together with her quintet. choosing her quintet for their empathetic and diverse personalities, hong found collaborators who supported her quest to establish a new sense of home while navigating the challenges of a new cultural environment. this album captures the quintet’s collective experiences and emotions during its creation, delving into themes of melancholy and innocence influenced by hong’s south-korean heritage and personal life. the compositions are crafted as a series of emotional vignettes, with tracks like ‘meaning of a nest’, ‘escapism’ and ‘heartstone’ showcasing a compelling balance of vibrant energy and contemplative stillness.

under the guise of an interplanetary night, space is the place organizes spectacular evenings with multiple artists who are pushing boundaries and crossing borders. with its roots in jazz and improvised music, the program explores a variety of genres. this edition features sonic adventurers with a latin american background, among others. the dj crew keep it moving will set the mood with dub, grooves and experiment. ibelisse guardia ferragutti & frank rosaly - mestizx they’re operating out of amsterdam and their music is undeniably contemporary, emphasizing their latin american backgrounds. ibelisse guardia ferragutti is a singer and performance artist from bolivia. frank rosaly grew up in a puerto rican family and made name as a drummer in chicago. mestizx , their new album for the american label nonesuch and international anthem is a propulsive, intercultural and anti-colonial mix of avant-jazz, punk, cumbia, electronics and more. beatrice sberna & gabriel de oliveira from the sinister lullaby ‘satan <3’ to the provocative punk jazz of ‘alternative scene’: throughout the years italian singer beatrice sberna and brazilian guitarist gabriel de oliviera have created a stylistically varied range of songs to be released on their debut album. influences from italian cantautori and brazilian folk are cheerfully blended together with the help of improvisers from all over the world—this concert will feature, among others, alessandro fongaro and michael vatcher. aquarius zen garden don’t let their calming name fool you— aquarius zen garden is an explosive electronic band consisting of ibelisse guardia ferragutti, jochem van tol and jacob maskell-key. their first performance was an improvised set at c.a.l.l. festival at plantage dok last june. the trio creates layered sound sculptures, most of the time highly danceable, with up-tempo beats. keep it moving ft. andy moor keep it moving is a translocal crew devoted to the finer aspects of music and they let warm grooves meet with ice-cold electronics. the djs from the kim crew will be playing alongside the one and only andy moor, aka dj andy ex. his free-jazz djing attitude spans genres from hip-hop to punk, ethio-jazz to dub and dancehall, gqom to cumbia, and beyond.

the amsterdam band koffie serves a fresh mix of afrobeat, jazz and seventies funk. remaining seated is no option during the shows of this charismatic group of young musicians. the seven piece band creates a sequel to nigerian afrobeat. inspired by this african style koffie plays endless beats with whipping improvisations. in the family concert series groove beest you will discover why some music makes you want to tap your foot to the beat or jump up and start dancing. together with mc groove beest and the band members you will feel the groove. sitting still is not an option; so jump, dance and clap along and unleash your inner beast. get in the mood with this video.

with their mix of caribbean grooves and dazzling jazz, sweet toko fits in anywhere, from tropical beaches to the city skyline. the band is led by singer and bassist adinda meertins. the international ensemble is complemented with extra percussion. adinda meertins won a latin grammy with the colombian formation monsieur periné, with which she toured the world. in her homeland the netherlands she founded sweet toko, with musicians from among others metropole orchestra and re:freshed orchestra. sweet & sour, the debut album of sweet toko, was produced by jason lindner, the keyboardist from new york who has played with david bowie. after the concert the music will continue with salsa panorama, a cuban salsa party at our café with an incredible view, where everybody is invited to dance. with or without experience, everybody is welcome. salsa panorama, organized by salsa district, has become a tradition at the bimhuis: this is the ninth edition already.

this double concert demonstrates how wide the spectrum of improvised music can be. opener is the new ensemble around guzheng virtuoso wu fei, known for her collaborations with john zorn and fred frith. the following duo musho features sofia jernberg and alexander hawkins, who draw from their experiences of playing with some of the greats of ethiopian music. house of wu fei: tides and time the everlasting cycle of ebb and flood, shaping coastal regions across the globe, is a source of inspiration for wu fei. ancient chinese poetry and the waves and tides are guidelines for her new ensemble house of wu fei, that originated in the city of ghent. wu fei can elicit unprecedented tones and timbres from the guzheng, the chinese zither, in combination with her voice. het solo album yuan appeared on john zorn’s label tzadik. on her unusual musical trajectory she met many other musical freethinkers including fred frith, gyan riley and abigail washburn. house of wu fei features dutch double bassist louise van den heuvel, and two flemish players: dijf sanders on electronica and simon segers (de beren gieren, black flower) on drums. musho (sofia jernberg & alexander hawkins) musho moves seamlessly between abstract exploration and the immediacy of song, with the visceral effect of sinking into a tender and powerful embrace. adopting the name musho—an amharic word meaning ‘sad song’—both members draw on their shared affinity for the music of ethiopia, having honed their languages in the company of musical elder statesmen from that country: sofia jernberg with hailu mergia, and alexander hawkins with mulatu astatke. swedish vocalist sofia jernberg and british pianist alexander hawkins have a special relationship with our stage, where they first performed together at october meeting 2016. jernberg has explored the outer edges of her voice in performances ranging from the opera pierrot lunaire by schoenberg to improv supergroup the end led by mats gustafsson. hawkins is internationally recognized as a musical innovator, having collaborated with legends such as anthony braxton and marshall allen, as well as peers such as tomeka reid and shabaka hutchings. musho by alexander hawkins - sofia jernberg ejn green pilot tour house of wu fei and musho take part in the green pilot tour, a project of europe jazz network (ejn) in collaboration with the european union under the creative europe program 2022-2024. the goal of the green pilot tour is sustainability, fair compensation, inclusiveness and gender balance in concert tours.
