Zeng! (old Zaandam for hit, blow) is the musical birthday party of drummer-beyond-category Han Bennink (Zaandam, April 17 1942). The program contains an number of combinations of musicians that has never been heard or seen before, like: trio Brotzmann/Terrie Ex/Bennink, Evan Parker with the ICP strings Oliver/Honsinger/Glerum, a duo of Bennink with the, in the Netherlands, unknown Danish pianist Rosengren and a trio with his Dutch piano opponents Misha Mengelberg and Guus Janssen, a clarinet quartet of Brotzmann, Baars, Moore and Delius... The ICP Orchestra, with guest musicians, plays compositions by Ellington, Ives, Nichols, Monk and Mengelberg, selected and arranged by Bennink. Fellow Zaankanter Terrie Ex and Han present their new album called... Zeng! "The Dutch drummer with the perpetual glee brings out the best in his cohorts [...] With an imagination the size of the Bush defense budget, he brings a playful attitude to the sometimes overly sober world of free improv..." CONCERT RADIO NEW STYLE, SATURDAY APRIL 21, 9pm - Midnight VPRO Jazz creates a series of special live broadcasts in collaboration with the Bimhuis on nine Saturday evenings in the 2006/2007 season.
